My second visit to the settlement of Nea Galini was an event. This time I was in Nea Galini to listen to the people and the stories they had to tell. The morning of March 25 began after a deep and peaceful sleep. Peaceful, just like the settlement that hosted me. <\/p>\n

The view from the attic of Ms Sofia and the quietness of the sea captivated you. A little later, the house began to fill with the voices of the neighbors who were slowly coming down from the neighboring houses. Simos came first with a bouquet of rattlesnake.<\/p>\n

That’s how it happened in Nea Galini. No special reason was needed for the groups to gather. No special reason was needed for the neighbors to offer you a bouquet of flowers. <\/p>\n

A little later, Lena and Agapi were added to the group. The sweet smell of espresso made our tongues run red from the previous night’s laughter, after the heavy doses of wine we consumed with our Palestinian friend Nidal. He lived in the area for 10 years and had learned quite a bit of Greek. Simos called him Nadal. He claimed that this way, it was easier for him to remember the name.<\/p>\n

Every time he called him Nadal I had to laugh because I remembered my own huge difficulty with names. So Nadal. Let it be. Nidal was well meant, he would have no problem with that. Good company and the Greek “Peace” were enough for him, just like for us.<\/p>\n

Soon, after coffee, the company dispersed to prepare for the meal that was to follow. I, having consumed according to Ms. Sophia’s words (and she was not wrong) a “pot of coffee”, followed her in search of more stories. From those that arise spontaneously, from those that have the good faith of people as their backbone. On the way, I met Mr. Angelos.<\/p>\n

The double bypass did not prevent him from enjoying the sea and the sun. He would like to see a pastry shop in the settlement so that he can take his grandchildren for ice cream in the summers. That’s what he told me. I opened the notebook and jotted down two words: pastry shop and first aid. Neither the pastry shop nor the first aid training would be a bad idea at all. The residents deserved it, because they had solidarity within them and could give it shape and form. I closed the notebook and opened the door to greet Ms. Sophia.<\/p>\n

The road took me to the house of the president of Nea Galini who was already talking to her. They welcomed me with open arms. Like they’ve always known me. The president’s wife was waiting momentarily for the children from Thessaloniki and the kitchen was on fire. The pans and mixers were working overtime. We stole some of the president’s time for one more story. He explained to me how he and his good friend had divided the plot of land: “One day, my girl, we were drinking our ouzos and putting crown letters. I got the part on the right, and I stayed on that side. We had no differences.”<\/p>\n

At the most inopportune moment I spilled the glass of water they had offered me. I shouldn’t have had that pot of espresso. Ms. Sophia was right. Here you go! now I stood full of guilt that I had spoiled the story for the best.
\nThe president’s wife probably understood and rushed like a fire extinguisher: “Don’t worry my girl, it’s water, I have water for good.” It was incredible how the residents could turn anything into something good.<\/p>\n

We greeted the president and his wife and started for the return. A second celebration was being prepared at Miss Sophia’s house. The fish, which had been marinated in plenty of coarse salt and rosemary, was ready to be grilled. I stole five minutes until the table was set so I could stealthily film the settlement with a drone. I wanted to close an image of him inside me, for all those times when I would feel that humanity had been lost. Kind of like a reminder. At take-off the waters of the sea were sparkling. In the background I heard Lena ask: “Where is Joanna?” “She probably went for a walk,” replied Mrs. Sophia.<\/p>\n

I landed the drone fast and clumsy. It’s okay, I’ll edit the shot. I entered the yard and they were all there. The hostess Ms. Sofia, Simos who had taken over the baking, Lena and Agapi with their wonderful salads, Nidal who had brought grappa, returning from the New Kallikratia parade, to celebrate Greek hospitality, Yulka with the her musky potatoes, Ms. Vasso who would treat me with all kinds of snacks every time I didn’t make it. I sighed in relief. Now I didn’t care if the drone shot was good, because the shot of peace inside me was great.<\/p>\n

My thoughts were interrupted by the voice of Nidal who was now raising his glass and inviting us to a toast: “To our health!”. This was Galini. A small dot on the map full of people who would give anything for each other.<\/p>\n

I left half-heartedly, without saying much goodbye. I wanted to hug them tightly one by one, but I chose not to. I didn’t like the goodbyes. This was a form of defense I had developed over time, whenever I parted from something I had loved. You will hug them when you see them again, I said to myself and my soul was filled with Peace! There was no reason to be upset. Nea Galini had coordinates and I had found them…!<\/p>\n
